Parts Needed to Install Brake Controller in 2018 Toyota Highlander with 4-Way Wiring

Question:

Hello, I need some help understanding setting up my highlander to use a trailer. I live in Virginia, trailers with a gross weight more than 3000 lbs need to have working brakes. I want to get a trailer with a max GVWR of 5000lbs, which is the max capacity my Highlander can tow. The trailer will have a max of two axles. I have purchased a Draw-tit Max E-loader class 4 hitch #75896, and I have also purchased a Curt T- connector Vehicle harness #C56217, along with a mounting Bracket #18144. I need a brake controller, and I am considering the Tekonsha Primus IQ Code: TK90160 At the Bottom, the page explains I also need a Universal Brake controller installation Kit # ETBC7. The page doesnt explain what this installation kit does. I am assuming the universal kit is what bridges the Electronic controller between the vehicle braking system and the Trailer brakes. is this correct? Is the brake controller I am considering an appropriate application for the highlander and trailer combination.

You are on the right track to being able to tow the trailer you mentioned with your 2018 Toyota Highlander. Since you already have a hitch and a 4-way installed the next thing you need is the # ETBC7 that you mentioned. This kit comes everything you need to convert the 4-way to a 7-way and wire up the brake controller. Basically the 4-way you have plugs into the 4-way of the included adapter to provide the taillight functions and the connections you make for the 7-way adapter then are what activates the brake controller.

I attached an install video that shows the install process on a similar 2014 Toyota Highlander for you to check out as well.
