In most cases, the tailgate on your truck can be left installed and in the down position while coupling to a 5th wheel trailer. Once the trailer is coupled you can then most likely raise the tailgate back up. I say in most cases as there could potentially be a situation in which the above is not possible but as we do not do testing on this, you will just need to be cautious while coupling your trailer for the first time. Only in rare cases does the tailgate need to be removed in order to couple a 5th wheel trailer.
If you however would like to leave the tailgate up while coupling a 5th wheel trailer you can do so by using the Stromberg Carlson 100 Series 5th Wheel Tailgate part # VG-04-100.
