Recommended Option to Carry Bikes and Skis on 2008 Land Rover LR2 HSE

Question:

I am looking for a better way to haul my bikes and ski/snowboard equipment around. The bikes are a bigger deal to me, but I might be open to something different if it would allow me to also haul my skis and or snowboard during the winter. I currently have a 2008 Land Rover LR2 HSE, with a bald top and no hitch on the back. Looking for suggestions as to what my options are.

There are a couple options for that are going to allow you to haul bikes as well as your skis and snowboard on your 2008 Land Rover LR2 HSE, and I'll go over both.

The first option is to put a roof rack on your Land Rover and add roof-mounted bike racks along with a separate ski/snowboard carrier. The roof rack I recommend for your '08 Land Rover LR2 with a naked roof is from Rhino-Rack and consists of Vortex Aero Crossbars # RRVA126B-2 (Black) OR # RRVA126S-2 (Silver), 2500 Series Legs # RRRLKVA and Fit Kit # DK010.

This roof rack uses aerodynamic bars that have rubber vortex strips in their top channels which greatly minimize the amount of wind noise you might encounter. The design of the bars, as well as their low profile, give the rack a graceful look. The crossbars are made from light but very strong anodized aluminum, which is also going to resist any type of corrosion. Additionally, the rack offers security in the form of built-in locks which secure the bars to your roof.

For a bike rack I really like the Yakima HighRoad Roof Bike Rack # Y02114 because this is a wheel-mount bike rack so you do not have to remove your bike's wheels just to transport it, making it really easy to use. It uses a ratcheting hook to secure your bike's front wheel and a ratcheting strap to secure its rear wheel. This rack has a 45 lb capacity and works with wheels that are 26" to 29" in diameter and up to 3-1/4" wide.

To carry your skis and snowboards I recommend the Rhino-Rack Ski and Snowboard Carrier because it is easy to use with its push-button release and can be mounted directly in the T-slots of your Rhino-Rack roof rack. This carrier is available to haul either 4 Skis or 2 Boards # RR574 or 6 Skis or 4 Boards # RR576. I have added a photo for to check out you which shows how this carrier looks when transporting skis.

The other option is to use a trailer hitch, hitch-mounted bike rack and a ski/snowboard carrier that actually mounts on the bike rack.

For a trailer hitch the best option is the Curt Trailer Hitch # C13052 because it has the most bumper clearance for use with a bike rack. This is a Class III, 2 inch hitch which is a bolt-on installation so no drilling will be required to install it on your Land Rover; the hitch is made in the USA and comes with a lifetime warranty. I have added a photo for you to take a look at which shows the hitch installed on a Land Rover LR2 HSE.

To carry your bikes the Thule Camber 2 Bike Rack # TH9058 is a great option that keeps your bikes from contacting each other or your Land Rover with anti-sway cradles that have reinforced straps. Thule is well-known for its quality bike racks and the Roadway is no exception while also remaining highly economical. It has an anti-rattle hitch pin, is made in the USA and has a lifetime warranty.

You can then carry up to 6 pairs of skis or 4 snowboards with the Thule Tram Ski and Snowboard Carrier Adapter for Hitch-Mounted Bike Racks # TH9033. As you can see by the accompanying photo this carrier gets placed on top of your Thule bike rack, securing with U-bolts and hand knobs. It is made of steel and even comes with locks on the arms to help secure your skis or snowboards. The hinged arms that carry your skis or snowboards open with push buttons making it easy to use. For added security I do recommend using Cable Lock # TH538XT to lock the Tram to your Roadway bike rack; this lock can also be used to lock your bikes to the bike rack.

The only other thing to keep in mind with this set up is adapter bar # TH982XT will be needed if your bike is dual-suspension, has a step-through frame or you want to carry a small children's bike. The bar will give those bikes a horizontal mounting point so they can be carried by the rack. I have also added links to video reviews and installs of these products for you to take a look at.

Question:

Hey thank you so much for your answer. The page has been very helpful and I plan on purchasing some of the items you suggested soon. I am wondering if the Thule Apex bike racks will also work with the 2008 Land Rover LR2? I like the fact that they have both the lock for the bikes and the lock for the hitch included in them. Do you recommend this product?

The Thule Apex XT 2 Bike Rack # TH9024XT will absolutely work with the Curt Trailer Hitch # C13052 on your 2008 Land Rover LR2 and is one of the nicest hanging bike racks in the industry.

This bike rack will help protect your investments due to the fact the bike rack locks to your hitch and its integrated cable lock secures your bikes. The Apex XT is also very easy to use because you can fold and tilt it with the use of levers and the turn of a hand knob installs it.

It will also withstand the elements due to its powder coat finish and is so durable that it comes with a lifetime warranty.

I have added a link to a video review of the Apex for you to check out as well.
