5th Wheel Hitch Recommendation for 2016 Ram 2500 Short Bed and Turning Point Pin Box

Question:

Hello experts, We just purchased our first 5th wheel and I will be installing a 5th wheel hitch. The unit has a Turning Point pin box and my truck is a 16 2500 Ram with the 6.4 bed. Can you install a slider hitch with this pin box or do I need fixed? Id like to position myself for a future purchase of a larger 5th wheel without the turning point box. Thanks!

Like a Sidewinder, the Turning Point Pin Box has a rotating turret so the pivot point is no longer at the king pin in the hitch, it is 22 inches rearward; because of this it is strongly recommended that you use a fixed fifth wheel hitch. Using the slider would mean the trailer's weight would be pushed too far behind the axle of your truck as opposed to being over the axle or just forward of it, which can put added stress on the truck, hitch, and trailer.

For a fixed hitch that works with the lippert turning point pin box you have, I recommend using the Curt E16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - Slide Bar Jaw - 16,000 lbs # C16115 along with the necessary Wedge # 30861 to keep the king pin from rotating inside the hitch.

In order to install this hitch, you'll need rails in the bed of your 2016 RAM 2500 short bed. If your truck has the 5th wheel prep package then you'll just need to add this adapter, part # C29BR. If your truck does NOT have the prep package then you'll instead need Installation Rail Kit # C16427-204.
