How to Route the Trailer Wiring Plug Permanently Outside Next to the Hitch on a 2011 Toyota Sienna

options on mounting the plug permanently outside next to the hitch rather than having it sticking out of the back gate.

To route the trailer wiring connector outside on your 2011 Toyota Sienna you will need to find a grommet in the rear of the vehicle. I attached a photo showing a grommet that can be used in the cargo area of the 2011 Sienna under the carpeting.

We have a video, see link, detailing this wiring harness installation. The grommet used in the video to route the power wire to the vehicle battery could be used to route the 4-Way connector out of the vehicle and back to the trailer hitch. I spoke to the installer in our video and he said that the grommet he used most likely would not be large enough to route the 4-Way connector itself out of the vehicle.

You would probably have to cut the connector off leaving enough wire to splice the like colored wires back together after routing the wiring down out of the cargo area and under the vehicle. If you did the splicing inside the cargo area of the vehicle the splice locations would be protected from the elements and last much longer.

Once you have the wiring routed out of the vehicle to the hitch, you can use the 4-Way mounting bracket, # 18144, and the No-Drill Mount Bracket, # 18140, to mount the connector near the receiver on the hitch.
