What are the Differences Between Trailer Wiring Options for a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

The difference between the two wiring harnesses 118294 and 56094 appears to be that the 118294 uses a separate protection circuit for shorts. I would assume that the 56094 would use the circuit protection as is being used for the taillights themselves. In other words, if there was a short, the fuse and/or relay used for the turn signal would blow. Is this not sufficient?

The Curt wiring harness, # 56094 and the Tow Ready harness # 118264, are for different variations of a 2012 Chevy Equinox. Tow Ready harness # 118264 is designed for vehicles that have a factory tow package. Curt harness # 56094 is for a vehicle that does not have the factory tow package.

You are correct in that the Curt harness would receive power through the vehicle wiring to the trailer lights. Any problem could affect the vehicle electrical system.

Another option is to use the Tow Ready harness # 118494. This harness receives power from the vehicle battery to power the trailer lights. It is circuit protected with the included in line fuse, and only receives the brake, tail, and turn signals from the vehicle wiring but not the power for the trailer lights. I have included a link to the installation details for this harness and a link to a video showing a typical installation for you.
