Bike Rack Solution That Allows Full Access to Rear Door of Vehicle

Question:

Does the tilting feature also work while bikes are mounted on the rack, or only while the rack is empty?

Hanging style bike racks can't tilt with bikes loaded since that would brake the frame cradles but I believe I have a solution that would work well. For that I recommend the Yakima FullSwing part # Y02465 which allows you to swing the bike rack out and away from the rear of the vehicle with bikes loaded to give you full access to the rear of it. I attached a review video for this rack for you to check out as well.

If you plan on carrying any womens or alternative framed bikes without horizontal top tubes you may also be interested in purchasing a Kuat Bike Frame Adapter Bar # UB01 to provide a horizontal top tube on your bikes to provide an attachment point. I attached a review video for this product also. This will allow the bikes to be carried more level and will provide more ground clearance.

Question:

We are seeking an option for our large, active family. We haul 6 bikes at a time, one of which is a ladies bike and 4 of which are various sizes of kid bikes. We would like to also be able to still access the back hatch on our Honda Odyssey while the bikes are mounted. We have the option of putting the 6th bike in the car or on top on the roof rack, but would like to find a rack that at least accommodates 5 of our 6 bikes. And we would like an option that will continue to work as the kids grow and their bikes get larger. Help! What are our best options?

The best option will be the swinging bike rack for 4 of the bikes and then a roof rack mounted bike rack for the additional two. There isn't a bike rack for more than 4 bikes that allows access to the rear cargo area which is why the additional two will have to be carried on the roof or in the vehicle.

The Yakima Frontloader part # Y02103 is a confirmed fit for the factory crossbars of your Odyssey and would be a great option as it allows you to keep the front wheels of the bikes attached to the bike. It fits front wheel diameters that are between 20 and 29 inches so it fits nearly all kids bikes.
