Recommended Tire Chains for 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek

Question:

The manual says snow chains cant be used due to clearance issues, but spring chains can. I dont really know the differencedo you carry spring chains, and what kind do you recommend? For reference, I live in the Nevada desert but will be occasionally driving into the mountains of Colorado or Utah for some winter skiing, and want to make sure Im prepared. I have BFG ADVANTAGE SPORT AS 225/55R17 97V BSW ALL SEASONinch tires I think the brand is Goodyear.

Tire chains do come in several varieties and some need more space within the wheel wells than others in order to operate safely. There are actual chains like # TC1138 and also the "spring chain" or cable type such as # PW1038 which require far less space. Both of these chain products fit the 225/55R17 tires on your Crosstrek and you can see these and others for your tire size on the linked page.

The auto maker always gets the final word on use of any type of tire traction device to be installed on their vehicle and as you noted Subaru states in the owner's manual (page 8-11) that only low-profile Class S type traction devices should be used and then only on the two FRONT tires.

Cable chain set # PW1038 is a Class S product that will work on your tires and car and not violate the directive in the owner's manual. These low-cost light-duty chains will let you meet a posted legal requirement to have chains with you "just in case". These will need rubber tensioners # PW105.

However, instead I recommend another set of Class S chains from Konig, item # TH00023103, because while these also meet the clearance requirement they will actually perform far better than any spring chain or cable chain product. They will also be easier to install.

If your budget allows there is another Class S option from Konig that will be much easier to install, their EasyFit chain set # TH04115103 shown in the linked video. These chains offer automatic tension control (no other parts needed) and a quick release to make using them a lot easier than most other chain products. I strongly recommend either of these Konig options over the cable chains.

With any tire chain product always keep driving speed to 30-mph and remove the chains as soon as you reach clear pavement.
