Could Yakima LongArm Be Used At Higher Setting and Clear Tailgate

Question:

Hello. I am considering buying the Yakima long-arm bed extender mainly because it gives me multiple options with respect to positioning it vis-a-vis the truck bed level. Specifically, I plan to use it to carry two 12-ft. kayaks in a 1993 GMC Sonoma. Because of the wheel wells in the truck bed, I will need to build a platform about 12 inches above the floor of the bed so the two kayaks can lay flat side by side over the wheel wells. Thus, I am looking for a bed extender that can be set so that isnt totally level with the bed. The Yakima is the only one Ive seen that has multiple set points/angles for the height of the extender not just bed or cab height. However, it isnt clear from the materials Ive seen if the Yakima can be set at the position one up from bed level, and still allow the tailgate to be down it is about 18-19 inches in height, with enough clearance so the gate doesnt sit on or rub against arm of the the extender? Can you help with an answer? Thanks!

That's a hard question to answer since it's a very unique application of the Yakima LongArm Truck Bed Load Extender # Y01149 and it's on a vehicle we've never test fit it on. The good news is that if you are willing to remove your tailgate you'd be totally fine. So even if you get it and you don't have the clearance with the tailgate folded down you could take off the tailgate and you'd have it.

On most newer trucks that have taller tailgates I'd say what you are trying to do wouldn't be possible.
