Can Convert-A-Ball Adapter # CAB-C5GX1416 Be Used to Tow Gooseneck with 2010 F150 with 5.5 ft Bed

I have a 2010 F150 Super Cab with a 5 1/2 foot bed, I also have a 2003 Layton Scout 237 Fifth Wheel Camper, and I was wanting to put a ball in my truck. Is there an adapter I can put on my camper so I can pull it or am I going to have to my fifth wheel hitch in the back? Any other suggestions?

Due to the short length of your truck box, Convert-A-Ball does not recommend using the Cushioned 5th Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter part # CAB-C5GX1216. The manufacturer does not recommend this item for use in truck beds shorter than 6 feet in length.

The problem with towing a fifth wheel with a short bed pickup is the clearance between the fifth wheel and the rear of the truck cab. There is a danger of the trailer loft striking the rear of the truck cab during turns.

Your best bet would be to install a fifth wheel hitch in the truck bed, and replace the existing pin box on the fifth wheel with a Sidewinder replacement pin box. If you click on the provided link, you can see more information about the Sidewinder and a formula that will help you determine if there will be sufficient clearance between the trailer and the rear of the cab. You will need at least 4 inches of clearance between the front of the trailer loft and the rear of the truck cab and 6 inches of vertical clearance between the bottom of the loft and the top of the truck bed side rails in order to safely negotiate 90 degree turns.

The Sidewinder you need is specific to the existing OEM pin box on your fifth wheel. The FAQ page I linked you to shows a listing of which model Sidewinder is compatible with which pin box model number. Your OEM pin box should have a sticker or plate on it listing the model number and manufacturer.

It sounds as if you already have a fifth wheel hitch. You will need a rail and bracket kit to install it, part # RP30035-426.

I have linked you to some FAQ articles about the Sidewinder, as well as the install instructions for the rail and bracket kit.
