Can I Use Hitch Adapter In 2017 Mazda CX-5 OEM 1-1/4 Hitch For Cargo Carrier Made For 2 Hitch

I have a 2017 CX-5 GT with a factory installed hitch that was on the car when I bought it new. I am looking at the Curt 18153 cargo carrier - but it fits in a 2inch receiver. The receiver I have is a 1 1/4. 1 can I use an adapter? 2 what will the max load be if I use an adapter?

It is possible to use a hitch like Brophy adapter # HTAD which designed to adapt Class I and Class II 1-1/4" hitch receiver to 2" receivers. However, it does cut the tongue weight of your hitch in half. For example: If your 1-1/4" is a class II hitch the tongue weight rating is most likely 350 lbs so the new tongue weight rating would be 175 lbs and you still want to factor in the weight of the Curt Carrier # C18151 itself which is 70 lbs. Now you are left with 105 lbs of cargo you can carry safely.

If your hitch is a Class I hitch then your tongue weight rating as it stands is probably 200 lbs so you would be able to carry only 30 lbs in the carrier once you factor in the Curt carriers weight.

I recommend, instead, the Curt Cargo Carrier part # C18110 for your 1-1/4" hitch. It fits the hitch without the use of an adapter so it will allow you use the full capacity of your hitch. It also measures 47" long x 19" wide which is the closest in capacity option we have to the Curt Carrier you wanted.

I do recommend using a stretchable Cargo Net part # C18201 with integrated hooks to keep all of your cargo inside your carrier.

You also want to check your owner's manual to make sure you are not exceeding the weight rating of the vehicle itself as well.
