Is It Okay To Inflate Tires To 60 When They Are Rated For 80 PSI

My tires say to inflate 80 psi cold so what should I inflate hot? I have a tire monitor on all tires and inflate to the high 60s then when traveling they move up into the low 70s is that ok?

Expert Reply:

No, you always want your trailer tires to be inflated to the max PSI listed on the sidewall regardless of traveling .When you inflate them to their max PSI they are able to maintain their load capacity so that they are not overloaded. Overloading the tires can lead to excess heat which is the number one reason for tire failure.

The PSI increasing a little when you are traveling is not going to matter as long as your staying within the limits of the tire such as load range, and speed rating. Tire manufactures test tires for situations where the PSI may increase slightly.
