Question:
I understand the color code, but it shows to run 2 brown wires one on each side, but you only have 1 brown wire on a 4 way plug

You are correct a standard 4-way plug only has 1 brown wire for the tail/running lights. However, some trailers use a wish bone wiring harness like part # A20WB that comes with 2 brown wires, one for each side of the trailer which makes wiring the trailer much easier. If you do not use a wish bone you would need to splice into the brown wire to create a jumper connection to the other side of the trailer.
