Could you use a small 12v battery i.e Energizer A23 instead of running the wire all the way to car battery?

The type of battery you described is not something you will be able to use to install the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # HM11143894 on your 2011 Subaru Impreza Wagon
You need to run a hot lead to the battery because this is the only way to ensure your car's wiring is not otherwise affected. To do this you may need Wire Loom, 10' Long # 7509-10 and Loom Clamp -1/4" # A0250.
