How to Carry Three Bikes on a 2006 Honda Accord

Question:

Im looking to carry 3 bikes on a platform style rack with an 06 Honda Accord. As far as I can tell, receiver hitches for this car are only available in 1.25inch class 1, which is fine for most two-bike rack models, but three-bike and above racks seem to be 2 inch class 2 compatible only. Is there a configuration that would allow me to carry three bikes on a platform style hitch rack on a honda accord? Thanks for the help!

While there is a way to carry three bikes on your 2006 Honda Accord, you are correct that this cannot be done with a trailer hitch and platform bike rack because all of the trailer hitches that fit your '06 Accord are Class I hitches with a 1-1/4 inch receiver such as the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 24787. Class I hitches such as this are limited to carrying only two bikes because there is too much weight being put on the hitch at too far a distance. The further from the hitch the weight is spread, the more more leverage the hitch has to be able to withstand, which is not something a Class I hitch is rated for.

To carry three bikes you will need to use a trunk-mounted bike rack, and there are some very good options which will work to stabilize your bikes and keep your Accord free from any type of damage.

I recommend checking out the Thule Passage 3-Bike Carrier # TH911XT because it is the most cost-effective and easy to use.

The only thing to keep in mind is that when using any hanging rack you'll need Bike Frame Adapter Bar # TH982XT if your bike is dual-suspension, has a step-through frame or you want to carry a small children's bike. The bar will give those bikes a horizontal mounting point so they can be carried by the rack.

I have added a link to a video review for you to check out as well on the adapter bar and Thule Passage 3-Bike Carrier # TH911XT.
