Does Payload of 2018 Ram 2500 Reduce as More Passengers and Cargo are Added to Pickup

Hello! I own a 2018 Ram 2500 Crew Cab Short Bed 4x4 Cummings Diesel that I will be installing the 5th wheel prep kit and use the BW sliding hitch you offer for the factory pucks. My main question is as follows. It seems my truck can tow a bit over 17,300 lbs. and says a maximum payload of 2,107 lbs. including occupants. If I subtract the weight of the occupants 500lbs, BW sliding hitch 300lbs and a few extras of 50lbs. That supposed leaves me with 1,257 lbs. remaining, which is not so great and seems off for such a powerful truck. I’ve attached pictures to reference the sticker weights of the truck itself. The tires are rated for a maximum of 3,600lbs. Each. With the truck facts now provided. Im interested in purchasing a 2020 KEYSTONE COUGAR 368MBI that weighs 11,395 lbs. unloaded, but has a pin weight of 1,980 lbs. This is where my concern lies with the maximum payload of the truck and the total weight of all the items. Am I reading this incorrectly?

Thank you very much for that info!

When you are talking about payload for a pickup and 5th wheel towing then yes, the people plus 5th wheel hitch plus cargo will reduce your payload. So while your 2018 Ram 2500 can easily handle the weight of the 2020 Keystone Cougar 368MBI, it can't handle the payload capacity so you need to find a smaller 5th wheel trailer.

One thing that you can do to cut down on payload weight some is to use a lighter stationary 5th wheel hitch like the Reese # RP30918 with the Custom Wedge # RP44FR and swap out your pin box for a Sidewinder. Not only does this lower your 5th wheel hitch weight to just under 180 lbs but it also gives you enough clearance so that you don't have to get in and out of your truck to make tight turns.

The other solution would be to switch to a bumper pull camper because payload doesn't have as much affect on the trailer size going this route.

If you decide to go with the Sidewinder option with a lighter 5th wheel trailer let me know what your pin box number is and I can make a recommendation. If you want to check out the bumper pull option then let me know what trailer you end up looking at and I can help you with any additional products to help with ride quality that way as well.
