Longer Ball Mount Solution to Allow More Clearance Between Tailgate and Trailer Jack

Hi, I have a tacoma and I want to be able to have my tailgate down while I tow my 4000lb trailer at the same time. Right now when my tailgate is down it hits the propane tank cover by about two inches. What I need is a 2inch hitch extender that will give me at least another 4 I inches of clearance for my tailgate to be down. My tongue weight is around 400 pounds.

Your best solution will be to go with a longer ball mount so that you get the clearance you want between the tailgate and the trailer jack. Hitch extensions like you mentioned can work but they also cut the hitch capacity in half since due to added movement and leverage so I don't recommend them as an ideal solution.

For example, we have the Hidden Hitch ball mount part # 80232 which 15-3/4 inches long and has a 2 inch drop. For a ball mount with more drop (if needed) we have the # C45240 which is 12-1/4 inches long from pin hole to ball hole and has a drop of 5-3/4 inches. This actually has two hitch pins too so that if you ever didn't want to have the longer ball mount you could have a more standard length one. For a hitch ball we have the # 63845 for a 2 inch ball or part # 63847 for a 2-5/16 inch ball size.
