Parts Needed to Tow 1,500 Pound Trailer with 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

Question:

Hello, can this hitch tow a trailer that weighs about 1500lbs? If it can what other attachments would you recommend?

The Curt Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13206 that you referenced features a 4,000 pound towing weight capacity so it's more than capable of pulling a 1,500 pound trailer. This trailer weight sits well below its limits.

I also took a look at the online version of the owner's manual for your 2017 Subaru Outback and it lists a towing capacity of 2,700 pounds as long as the trailer is equipped with brakes. If the trailer doesn't have brakes the towing capacity drops to 1,000 pounds.

With all of this in mind you can absolutely tow a 1,500 pound trailer and in addition to the hitch you will need a wiring harness, brake controller, and ball mount/hitch ball combo.

For the trailer wiring harness I recommend the Tekonsha T-One # 118467 that will plug right into existing ports behind the driver's side trim panel. This will provide you with a 4-Way to power a trailer's basic signal lights but you will need to upgrade it to a 7-Way with the Wiring Kit # ETBC7L so that you can power a trailer's electric brakes via a brake controller.

I have attached an install video for the T-One Harness on your vehicle that you can follow along with as well as the written instructions for the # ETBC7L Kit that you can look through.

Then for the brake controller itself I highly recommend the Curt Echo # C51180, which offers reliable performance paired with a uniquely simple install process and operation. The Echo simply gets plugged into the installed 7-Way connector on your Outback and pairs to your smart phone via Bluetooth. It will automatically power the trailer brakes in correspondence to the deceleration of your vehicle (the harder you brake the more power it sends back) and you can adjust any settings or activate the manual override with your phone. This eliminates the need to add an additional component inside the vehicle (like with most other controllers) and allows you to easily transfer the brake controller to other vehicles if needed.

I have attached a short video demonstration that you can check out as well.

Then for a ball mount the Curt # C45030 will work really well along with an appropriately sized hitch ball for your trailer coupler, either a 2" like # 63845 or a 1-7/8" like # 19260.
