Fifth Wheel and Gooseneck Trailer Hitch Recommendations for a 2007 Dodge Ram 2500

Question:

Hello, I own a 2007 Dodge 2500 short bed, quad cab Heavy Duty, 5.9L Cummins truck. I need a gooseneck plate and a fifth wheel hitch that I can slide. Can you tell me what will fit my truck and allow me to do both. I think what I need here is a set of rails that bolt around the frame with mounting pins that accomodate a fifth wheel receiver and a gooseneck plate. On a gooseneck I may pull as much as 30,000 lbs. and no more than 12,000 on a fifth wheel... I am new to all of this and any help you give me would be appreciated! Thanks!

There are a couple of issues that you need to be aware of. First, you need to consult the owners manual for the gross combined vehicle weight rating for the truck. From what I could find, the towing capacity of the truck does not come very close to 30,000 pounds.

Next, I do have a solution for installing a 5th wheel hitch and gooseneck in your truck. First, for a 5th wheel trailer hitch and install kit, I recommend the Reese 16K round tube slider, # RP30075 which will offer you the most travel (12 inches) for the most clearance available for any slider.

For an installation kit use # RP50140-58. This is a custom installation kit that will install much quicker than a universal kit. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view.

For a gooseneck, you can use # 49080. This is a gooseneck plate that fits in above the bed rails. Just pull out the 5th wheel hitch and insert the gooseneck plate. The ball is offset to one end for use on short bed trucks. It is rated for up to 25K but you will be limited by the capacity of the truck.
