It sounds like you have a Class I Trailer Hitch like the Draw-Tite # DT24959 installed on your 2017 Subaru Impreza. Certain Class I trailer hitches like this one feature a tab inside the receiver that prevents higher class accessories from fitting properly. This was done by the manufacturer to prevent the trailer hitch and vehicle from being overloaded with higher class/heavier carriers or bike racks. Your existing Cargo Carrier is most likely a Class II or higher accessory, which is why it will not fit into the hitch receiver.

You have a couple of options. I recommend replacing your Curt Cargo Carrier with one that is rated for Class I trailer hitches, like the Curt Cargo Carrier # C18110. This will fit into your existing hitch receiver and it has platform dimensions of 47-11/16 inches long and 19-1/2 inches wide. It also features a nice 3-3/4 inch shank rise that will increase its ground clearance. I have attached a short video demonstration on this carrier along with a link that will take you to our available selection of Class I cargo carriers.
