Option to Increase Turning Radius of Trailer Towing Setup Without Losing Weight Capacity

Question:

Hello, I have a 3700 lb trailer that I tow with Ford E-150 van. The van has a Curt hitch rated for 6000 lbs. my turning radius is very bad. Can I use the Curt 18 inch extender? Thanks,

Hitch extenders can add enough length to give a better turning radius but the problem is that they cut the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50 percent. So your best option would be to go with a longer ball mount to gain the extra clearance without sacrificing capacity.

For example we have the Hidden Hitch Ball Mount part # 80232 which is 15-3/4 inches in length and has the same 6,000 lb capacity as your vehicle. I attached a review video for this for more info as well.

Question:

Thanks so much for responding but I don’t think that will work. I have the sway control hitch with chains. The ball is attached to it and goes into the hitch receiver.

You'd then just need a longer weight distribution shank like the part # EQ90-02-4600 which is 18 inches long.
