Solution for Weld Nuts on 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe that Won't Allow Hitch Bolts to Thread In

Question:

I have a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe 3.5l AWD Limited that I purchased this year so the vehicle is 8 years old already but only has 75,000 miles. I purchased the following products from you to haul a utility trailer: Draw Tite Trailer Hitch: 36511 T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package 118258 The wiring harness install went just fine. I cleaned the weld nuts the best I could but I could not get the supplied M10 x 1.25mm bolts to go in any of the holes. I am assuming the bolts you supplied are the correct bolts and that Hyundai would not have made some vehicles with different sized weld nuts. I have an M10 x 1.25mm tap that I could use to try to clean out the threads but I am afraid the tap may just make a mess of the threads. The installation video says that in extreme cases to use a thread tap. I know that there are also items call thread chasersinch which I believe are used for cleaning out / restoring threads which I do not have. So, what is your recommendation for me to clean out the weld nuts so I can get this project completed? If you need pictures, let me know. FYI: I have never used taps or dies before so I may just be over thinking this. Thanks,

Your weld nut issue is a very common problem when installing a hitch on a vehicle that has had a few years on it. The solution is the thread tap like you mentioned. Just pick the correct size tap and take your time with it and you'll be totally fine.

I have included a few links on hitch installation tips, cleaning weld nuts, and a video on cleaning weld nuts for you.
