Question:
I have a 2012 Mazda3 sedan. On several different reviews I have heard this hitch has some problems with it hitting the exhaust when going over bumps. Is this a common problem that you know about?

I took a look at the reviews of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11393 and there was one review that mentioned the hitch bumped the exhaust on rough roads.
Due to that, for your 2012 Mazda 3 sedan, I recommend the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24842.
I went through all of the reviews and didn't find anyone mention the issue about the exhaust, and that is likely because the Draw-Tite has a bit of a different design. The brackets are in a different position from the Curt, and as you can see from the accompanying photos of the underside of a Mazda 3 with both both hitches installed, the Draw-Tite is well away from the exhaust.
I have added a link to a video install for you to check out as well of the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24842.
