Electric Brakes for 10 x 2-1/4 Drums on 3,500 lb Axle & How to Determine Correct Bearings

Question:

Good Morning: A friend has a PJ Trailer 18 car haller with 3500# tandem axles. The axles appear to be Quality Running Gear QRG as stamped on the drum. Backing plates are 4 bolt at 2-7/8 on center. Drums are 5 bolt 10x2.25. We are in need of auto adjust brake assemblies and complete bearing kits with nut keepers, bushings, bearings, races, etc. Can you recommend the correct part numbers for these assemblies. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Let's start with the brake assemblies, which you were kind enough to give the dimensions on for the drum, as well as the axle capacity, which are the most important things.

For self-adjusting electric brakes I recommend the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting # AKEBRK-35-SA.

These brakes will fit your brake mounting flange and fit your 10" x 2-1/4" drum; you will simply need the Mounting Hardware for 10" Brake Assemblies # BRKH10B.

As for the bearings, the most likely kit you need for a 3,500 lb axle with a 5-bolt wheel is the Bearing Kit for #84 Spindle # BK2-100 but there's only one way to know for certain. You will need to take apart your current hub assembly and look at the bearings themselves; wipe away the grease and you should be able to see the part number stamped directly on them. If you are unable to find them, you need to use Digital Caliper # 301-17068 and measure your spindle to the thousandths of an inch where the bearings and grease seal ride. You can use the photo I've attached to see exactly where you need to measure.

I have added a link to a couple help articles for you on bearings I recommend checking out, and if you get back to me with the measurements and/or bearing numbers I can help you find the right parts. I've also added a link to our selection of bearings, races and seals. Additionally, for when you are re-packing them I do recommend the use of Lubrimatic Grease # L11390 with Bearing Packer # ALL647646.
