Connecting to Reverse Light Circuit of Vehicle Wiring When Installing 7-Way
Question:
SUV came with 4 way trailer wiring. Need a 7 way. Installed connector and every thing works fine except backing up the trailer. On the trailer it says blue wire needs to go to reverse lights. How do I do this? do I actually fish the blue wire through everything and attach it to the reverse lights? There has to be a better way.

Expert Reply:
If a vehicle like yours didn't come with a 7-way or have 7-way wiring present from the factory the only way to activate the reverse light circuit is to tap into the vehicle's reverse light circuit that runs to the rear of the vehicle. Unfortunately there isn't an easier way. So what you'll need to do is use a circuit tester like the part # PTW2993 to test all of the wires that run to the reverse lights until you find the one that has 12 volts when the vehicle is in reverse and use it for the center pin of the 7-way.
