Water Gets Into Boat Trailer Taillights and Blows Fuse
Question:
Every time I go fishing I have to wait about 20 miles of driving before plugging trailer lights back in so its dry in the connection or I blow a fuse. Today I seen water in the housing of one of the lights. Is that whats causing the fuse to blow?

Expert Reply:
You've hit the nail on the head. When the water is in the taillights assembly, it shorts the power supply circuit to ground causing you to blow fuses. I've seen folks drill a drain hole in the lowest point of the underside of the lamp housing, but your best course of action is to prevent the water from getting in there in the first place.
The best fix would be to replace the existing lights with submersible ones, like the # ST17RB and # ST16RB. These lamps are sealed to keep water completely out of the taillight housing, which would prevent this from occurring in the future. Rather than incandescent lamps, I'd actually recommend the LED version, part # TLL160RK. LED lamps draw only a fraction of the power of incandescent bulbs, and they last a very very long time. These lamps are specifically designed for boat trailers, so you can't wrong there.
