Rhino-Rack or Yakima Platform Rack for Carrying Bikes on an SUV

Question:

I am thinking about buying a rhino or yakima platform for my suv, and would like to be able to put my bikes on it. How do people get the bikes up there?

If you're planning on loading bikes on a platform then the Yakima LockNLoad would be better than the Rhino-Rack Pioneer simply because the LockNLoad is a bit more user friendly when it comes to installing different types of carriers.

The 2 most common sizes for the LockNLoad are the 55" Long x 49" Wide # Y05044-39 and the 60" Long x 54" Wide # Y05045-39. All of the larger style require a 3-crossbar mounting system. If you can let me know what SUV you will be using for this I can make a recommendation for you.

One of the smallest roof mount bike racks available is the Kuat Trio # TR02 because it is a fork mount. This would be the type of carrier you could use to get the most amount of bikes up on top of your SUV. If you're talking about how people manage to lift the bike to load and unload I can say from the experience the answer to that question is "very carefully". Any time I've loaded/unloaded a bike from the roof of anything taller than a sedan I have personally used a stool like the Adjustable-Height, Folding Platform Step # S-150 which can be 4" - 8" tall.

Question:

Ok, thanks. So, exactly what would I need to mount the 54 inch wide lock and load and three bike racks for mountain bikes? Do you mind giving me the list of what I would need and total cost, including the platform? I have a 2016 BMW X5 with flush rails. Thank you.

To mount the LockNLoad to the flush rails on your 2016 BMW X5 with the following parts:

LockNLoad - # Y05045-39
60" JetStream Crossbars - Black # Y00426
RidgeLine Towers - # Y00145
RidgeClip Fit Kit - # Y06010

Then for the bike racks you can go with the FrontLoader # Y02103 for a wheel mount, the HighSpeed # Y02115 for a fork mount.

If you wanted to add matching locks to the roof rack and bike racks you'll need to go with the 8-pack # Y07208 and then order 2 extra lock cores that match these once you get them, or just lock 2 of your towers instead of all 4. Be sure to alternate the orientation of your bikes so they fit properly on your roof.

I have attached a link with all of the roof rack and platform parts so you can see that total cost (standard shipping would be free) so you'll just need to add 3 of whichever bike rack you choose as well as the lock cores if that's something you're interested in.
