How to Determine Correct Electric Brake Size, and Brake Controller for 2016 Ram 1500

Looking at changing my surge brakes on 1997 crownline boat trailer to electric brakes. Boat weight is approx. 3700 lbs. Pulling with 2016 Ram 1500 V6. What electric brakes do you recommend. Also need a brake controller for the truck.

To get the correct electric brakes for your boat trailer, you need to know the weight rating of your axle, the bolt number of your brake mounting flange as well as the depth and diameter of your hub and drum.

For example, you mentioned a weight of 3,700 lbs so you could have a trailer with an axle that is rated for 5,200 lbs and a drum that measures 12" diameter x 2" deep. If so, and you had a 5-bolt mounting flange you would need the Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-7-SA with Mounting Bolts # BRKH12.

I have added a link to our selection of electric brakes for you once you know what size your drum is, or you can let me know and I can find the right one for you. Keep in mind you'll also need the Hopkins Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit # 20400 and trailer wiring for your trailer with the etrailer Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit with Junction Box and RV Style Connector # e99011.

As for a brake controller for your 2016 Ram 1500 I recommend the Trailer Brake Controller # TK63VR with Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Ram # 3024-P.

This is a great value for a brake controller that works very effectively and is easy to use but at a lesser cost than similar controllers. I've added links to video reviews for you to check out as well.
