How To Secure Fishing Kayak On Lower Level Of Yakima EasyRider Double Decker Trailer

Question:

I am interested in this trailer for storing/transporting my fishing kayak on the lower level while using the upper level for a cargo box and sometimes a second lighter paddle kayak. Due to the weight of the larger fishing kayak about 125lbs I would like keep the boat stored on bunk boards. The kayak is just over 13foot long and the height is about 13-14 inches. I would like to minimize the amount of unsupported weight. Can you tell me if 7 or 8foot long 2x4 bunks can be installed with u-bolts on the lower frame with brackets to provide for enough clearance to store the boat? Next, can you tell me if any aftermarket spare wheel/tire with a similar bolt patter and aftermarket spare bracket may be used on this trailer or must the Yakima spare tire kit be purchased? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

The lower level of the Yakima EasyRider Double Decker Trailer part # Y08129 wound be a great place to store a fishing kayak. I'm sure you could devise a way to attach some bunk boards but I really don't have any options for this so instead i'd recommend the Yakima BigCatch Kayak Carrier part # Y04091 which is designed for these larger fishing kayaks.

In regards to the spare wheel/tire, the Spare Tire and Carrier for Yakima EasyRider Trailer part # Y08125 is the only thing we can recommend. The wheel and tire size are standard, it's the mount that is specific to the trailer.

Yakima Big Catch won't fit on the bottom due to a larger girth than the top bars. Honestly the big catch doesn't fit very comfortably in the top bars either which seem larger than the common cross bars on most vehicles.
