For a 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500HD model, when installing front mount hitch # 65028, the factory tow hooks do not need to be removed. I have included a link to the installation isntructions for you to view.
If you have a 1500LD model, the correct hitch is # 65023 and you would not remove the factory tow hooks for this hitch either. I have linked instructions for it as well.
