Yes the Yakima ShowDown Kayak Carrier # Y04081 needs a minimum of 3-1/2" but no more than 4" of overhang from the support tower. This is sometimes hard to achieve with roof racks. An alternative is the Lockrack Watersport Carrier # LR54FR. This is a really easy to use saddle style carrier. Removing one of the arms allows for you to slide your kayak into place. When both arms are in place it reduces the need for straps. It is not required but I highly recommend using a bow and stern strap especially like Thule's Quick Draw Tie-Down Ropes # TH855XT

If you would like a load assist kayak carrier but have clearance issues the Malone DownLoader Kayak Carrier and TelosXL Load Assist # MPG114MD-351XL is a good option. This is a J-Style kayak carrier that comes with telescoping arms to help you get your boat loaded. One drawback is you need to store the arms in your vehicle which take up a decent amount of room. This comes with all of the proper straps to get your kayak secured to your vehicle. I attached a video below that shows how this system works.
