Recommended Solution for Carrying Bikes and Towing A-Frame Trailer at Same Time

Question:

I own a SUV that Im towing a 2011 Coachmen Apex 17FB travel trailer with that has a weight distribution system on it. Im in the market for a bike rack for carrying 2 mountain bikes. Ive havent measured yet to see whether I have enough clearance to use the Swagman Traveler XCS2 without having to purchase another receiver. My tow capacity of my SUV is only 3500lbs and my trailer weighs in at around 3000 to 3500lb when its ready to be towed. My question is, how does using this Swagman Traveler XCS2 affect my tow capacity..? Ive read elsewhere that when using a double receiver that the tow capacity is greatly reduced, perhaps reducing it by half. I think I read somewhere that this bike rack doesnt affect tow capacity in that way but Im not an expert and want to be sure of it before I purchase one..

You'll still have to add the weight of the rack and the bikes to your tongue weight, but as long as your tongue weight stays under the capacity for your vehicle and hitch, you'll be fine. The other, and perhaps biggest issue is that using a dual hitch adapter like the # MPG544 to carry a bike rack is that it does reduce the tongue weight capacity of your hitch, so we do advise against it whenever possible.

If you can't make the Swagman Traveler XC2 Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 2" Hitches or RV Bumpers - Frame Mount # S64663 work because of the clearance from the bikes to the trailer jack, the Jack-It 2 Bike Rack for A-Frame Trailers - 22-1/2" Jack Clearance # LC429756 is a great option that looks like it will work on your trailer. This rack actually mounts under your trailer jack and extends 22-1/2" above it to provide you with room to carry 2 bikes on your trailer without worrying about using the hitch.

I've linked a video of the Jack-It for you to have a look at and learn more about it, but I believe this will be the best solution for you.
