Brake Controller Wiring Instillation On a 2021 Toyota Highlander
Question:
I am purchasing a 2021 Toyota Highlander with a hitch and 4 way flat connector installed. I asked the dealer to install a 7 way, because my trailer that I tow has a 7 way connector. My trailer has trailer brakes. My question is what can I do to add a brake controller only including the wiring? Would it be a stand alone wire or a pig tail to a 4 way? I dont need the trailer DC power or back up lights on the 7 way, the only thing I am missing with their 4 way install is power for my trailer brakes. Thanks!

I recommend the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 2 Axles - Proportional Item # C51180. If the dealership is installing the 7 pole connector, this controller doesn't require any additional wires to be ran inside the vehicle. Your cell phone is used as the controller. If the dealership only connected the wires for the light functions, the only thing that may need to be done is the power wire from the 7 pole may need to be extended to the battery. A circuit breaker is going to be required if routing the power wire from the 7 pole to the battery. I recommend In-Line Circuit Breaker - 20 Amp - Perpendicular Mount Bracket Item # 9506P. The video link I have provided can help walk you through routing the power wire.
The 7 poles we install in these situations have a 4 pole and 7 pole. The factory 4 pole would just be connected to the 4 pole on the 7 pole plug.
