For me there is one clear choice between the two bike racks you asked about, and for one very particular reason - convenience. Due to how convenient it is, I definitely recommend the RidgeBack, which is the following part number:
- Yakima RidgeBack 4-Bike Rack # Y02458
There are a lot of similarities between the two racks, but the one thing that makes the RidgeBack # Y02458 the better option is how much easier it is to install in your hitch. The RidgeBack uses a knob, called a "SpeedKnob" to install in your hitch; all you have to do is insert the rack in your hitch, push a pin in, and twist a knob. That's literally all there is to it. The BackRoad uses a threaded anti-rattle bolt so you'll have to get on the ground and use a ratchet to tighten it, which is just a pain.
The other big difference is that the knob used to tighten the RidgeBack is locking so it helps protect the investment you made in the rack; the BackRoad requires a lock be purchased separately, while the RidgeBack does not. So while both are really good bike racks that are going to do an exceptional job of transporting your bikes, for a quicker and much simpler installation I highly recommend the Yakima RidgeBack 4-Bike Rack # Y02458.
