Determining Correct Axle Upgrade For 2018 Grand Design Imagine Travel Trailer

Question:

Hello, I have a 2018 Grand Design Imagine 2670MK and I am looking at upgrading the axles and suspension components. We travel full time and pull long distance across country. We currently have 4400lb axles and everything is standard from the factory. What options do you recommend? We would like to get disk brakes if possible. We also aren’t opposed to replacing wheels and tires if needed. Thanks.

I would be happy to make a recommendation for upgraded axles and suspension components for your 2018 Grand Design Imagine 2670MK, but first I will need a few measurements from your current components.

Starting with the axle you will need to measure your current axles from hub face to hub face and from spring center to spring center to determine the correct length the replacement axle would need to be. For example the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with E-Z Lube Spindles - 89" Long - 5,200 lbs # 8327820 measures 89" from hub face to hub face, and 74" from spring center to spring center as shown in the included diagram. This axle has a 5200lb weight capacity, but keep in mind that replacing your axles will not increase the GVWR of your trailer, as you are limited to the lowest rated component which would then be the trailer's frame.

The correct disc brake kit will be dependent on the axle you choose. The # 8327820 would use Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 5,200-lb E-Z Lube Axles - 6 on 5-1/2 # 8-213-5UC1-EZ and Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 12" Rotor - 6 on 5-1/2 - Dacromet and KodaGuard - 5,200 to 6,000 lbs # K2R526DKG. You would also need Brake Lines # HydraStar Hydraulic Brake Line Kit # HS496-252, Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator # HBA16, Breakaway Kit # 20400, and a trailer brake controller that is compatible with electric over hydraulic brakes like the # 90195.

If you can provide the measurements of your current axle, I would be happy to recommend the correct replacement and confirm the suspension components compatible with that axle.

I included videos for each of the products mentioned, and a link to a helpful article that goes over adding electric over hydraulic disc brakes for you to take a look at.

Thank you for the clarification!

Since your axle has a hub face to hub face measurement of 86.5" I recommend the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with E-Z Lube Spindles - 86-1/2" Long - 5,200 lbs # 8327816. The spring center to spring center measurement of this axle is 71.5", so you will need to have the spring centers removed and the # TRSS300 welded in the correct location.

With this axle you will be able to use the Idler Hub Assembly # 8-213-5UC1-EZ, Disc Brake Kit # K2R526DKG, Brake Lines # HS496-252, EOH Actuator # HBA16, and Break Away Kit # 20400 previously mentioned.

I would use the same 4400lb leaf springs you currently have, as going to higher rated springs will actually have a negative effect and would be very stiff causing a not very fun towing experience.

For suspension enhancement with this axle I recommend the Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers for Tandem Axle Trailers - 5,200-lb to 7,000-lb Axle # RM-2460 which will reduce trailer bouncing and chucking to give you the smooth ride you are looking for when going on a long distance cross country trip.

Since the # 8-213-5UC1-EZ uses the 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern you will need to replace your current wheels. There are quite a few options for wheels that use this bolt pattern, so I went ahead and linked all of the wheels we offer with the 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern for you to take a look at.

I wasn't able to find which size tires your 2670MK uses, so if you can tell me your current tire size I would be happy to make a wheel and tire combination that will fit your specific trailer.

I included videos for each of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
