Also - need to know the exact wiring harness to use on a 2017 BMW 535i GT xdrive *that will not set off any engine codes when in stalled and in use with a trailer. thanks

My recommendation for a flat 4 pole trailer wiring is ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness w/ 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector and Installation Kit # 119250KIT. This will not require any splicing or cutting of your 2017 BMW 5 Series tail light wiring, but will simply clamp over the existing tail light wiring to retrieve the signal. You will then need to run the black wire to the positive terminal on your battery, then connect the white wire to bare metal for a solid ground connection. This will not throw a check engine code / light.

While we do not have a video showing this kit being installed on a 2017 BMW 5 series, I did link an installation video on an older BMW 5 series. Instructions are included with this trailer wiring kit.
