Best Bike Rack And Trailer Hitch Receiver For Carrying 2 Electric Bikes On A 2021 Subaru Crosstrek

Question:

I’m about to get a 2021 Subaru Crosstrek and intend to carry 2 heavy Ebikes on a hitch rack with total weight being around 190 pounds. Most likely I will get your Stealth hitch rack. Crosstrek’s maximum tongue weight is 200 pounds but I understand that the dynamic forces on it while driving down a bumpy road can be 100’s of pounds greater. Will this be safe? Also, I see some hitch bike racks secure the bike around the wheel rather than the frame. What are the pros and cons? I have fenders on my bikes but could possibly take those off if there’s a big advantage to securing them by the wheels instead of the frame......Thanks

Since your 2021 Subaru Crosstrek has a max tongue weight of 200lbs you do not want to exceed that. If you came up with 190lbs by adding your 2 electric bikes and a bike rack together, then you will be fine since it is still under the 200lb weight capacity of your vehicle. The Stealth Hitches Hidden Rack Receiver 2" # 391SUCT18 is confirmed to fit all models of the 2021 Crosstrek and has a high enough weight capacity to suit your needs.

Typically, frame-mount is a more secure and safer way to transport bikes than a wheel-mount, but the difference is not drastic and either one will work. Also since you have fenders you will want to go with a frame-mount design so there will be no interference. That being said, I would look into the Saris Freedom Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Frame Mount # SA4412B; for fat bikes use # SA4412B-FB instead. The Saris Freedom has a weight capacity of 60lbs per bike and attach to the bike frame. The Saris Freedom is very lightweight at only 22.5lbs, so this will work well when trying to stay under the 200lb weight capacity of your vehicle.

If you had the bike rack maxed out at 120lbs total, then the total weight would be around 142.5lbs on your trailer hitch receiver when figuring in the weight of the bike rack. This puts you at around 60lbs under the weight limit of your vehicle and will cause no issues. I have attached demonstration videos for you to check out.
