Question:

Hello, I am looking to purchase a bike rack for carrying 2 bikes and would like a little more information. Would the below rack be able to carry an extra large mtn. bike? Could you tell me the max distance between the weel base mounts so I can ensure my bike will fit? HLY94FR

The Hollywood Racks Destination Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Frame Mount # HLY94FR can handle bikes with a maximum wheelbase of 48", so it should be able to handle an extra large mountain bike in most cases.

If you find that you need a rack that is a bit larger, let me know what the wheelbase of your largest bike is and I can look for a suitable alternative.

For a wheelbase that long in a platform rack you'll need to use the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE2 Bike Rack for 2 Recumbent Bikes - 2" Hitches - Frame Mount # HR1450Z-R, which will be able to carry a bike with a 53" wheel base. You can adjust the other wheel cradles smaller to handle a bike with a shorter wheelbase as well, so it's a good solution for your bikes.

The only other alternative would be to use a hanging rack like the Thule Apex XT 2 # TH9024XT, which the wheelbase won't matter since it mounts the bikes by the frames. You will need a bike frame adapter bar like the # 64005 if either of the bikes have aggressive step-through frames; this will work to assist with mounting the bikes level on the carrier.
