Parts Needed To Add Electric Trailer Brakes To 1992 Starcraft Comet Trailer
Question:
I have a 1992 Starcraft Comet and would like to add brakes. The 4 bolt flange is present on the dexter torflex axle. Would these brakes work? I assume I’d need new hubs and since the trailer has 8 inch wheels I’ll have to get larger ones. The owner’s manual lists 5.3x12c as an option. Thanks for your help!

Since your 1992 Starcraft Comet has the 4 bolt brake mounting flange the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 7" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 2,000 lbs # AKEBRK-2 you were looking at will fit on your Dexter Torsion Axle.
The recommend hub is the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 2K E-Z Lube Axles - 7" - 5 on 4-1/2 - L44649 - Pre-Greased # AKHD-545-2-EZ-2K but you will need to confirm that your spindle uses inner and outer bearing # L44649.
You can do this by removing one of your current hubs and looking for the bearing number stamped on the face of each bearing as shown in the included picture of the # L44649.
The # AKHD-545-2-EZ-2K are compatible with 8" wheels but use the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern so you will need to replace your current wheels since they use the 4 on 4" bolt pattern.
If your tires are in good shape you can just use the # AM20006 and reuse your current 5.70-8 tires, or you can replace them with the Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # AM30859 since the owners manual for your trailer says they will fit.
Next you will need to add a 7-way connector to the trailer and junction box using the kit # HS381-9000. You will also need to # 10-1-1 go from the brake magnets to the junction box using heat shrink butt connectors # DW05745-5.
While that takes care of the trailer side of things, you will need to have a 7-way connector and trailer brake controller installed on your tow vehicle. If you do not just let me know the Year/Make/Model of your tow vehicle and I would be happy to recommend the correct parts for you.
I included videos of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
