Weight Distribution and Sway Control Hitch For a 2012 Jayco Jay Swift SLX Travel Trailer

Question:

I have a 2021 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk with factory tow package. I bought the Jeep specific to pull a 2012 Jayco Jay Flight Swift SLX Series M-145 RB weighs 2370 empty. My salesman said I would not need a weight and sway distribution hitch for that camper. Helpful friends tell me I do. I have already pulled the camper about 300 miles. I didnt have any problems. So my Question is: Do I need a weight distribution hitch?

Expert Reply:

I recommend the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37060ET for your 2012 Jayco Jay Flight Swift SLX 145RB. This hitch is rated for 200-600lbs of tongue weight and a trailer up to 6,000lbs. Your Jayco has 230lbs of tongue weight dry and the total weight is well below the maximum rating for the hitch. This will allow you to keep your hitch if you decide to get a larger camper in the future. The weight distribution portion of the hitch will allow you to maintain a level ride height on your 2021 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. This ensures that you do not have light steering or reduced braking. A built in sway control will reduce trailer sway that you get on the road caused by wind and large vehicle as you drive.

A 1-7/8" 12pt Thin Walled Socket # ALL643216 is required to install the included 2" hitch ball onto the head of the Equal-i-zer hitch. I recommend using the Sway Bracket Jackets # EQ95-01-5150 with the hitch. These nylon jackets sit between the weight distribution bars and trailer brackets to both reduce noise when maneuvering as well as extend the life of the parts.
