For your 2008 Dodge Dakota I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75251. It is a confirmed fit for the 2005-2011 model years. The Class III receiver is capable of supporting 500lbs of tongue weight and trailering 5,000lbs with a standard ball mount. With a weight distribution hitch the weight limit increases to 800lbs of tongue weight and 8,000lbs trailer capacity. Be sure to verify your weight capacity of your Dakota and use the lower of the numbers as your maximum capacity.

If your Dakota does not have any factory trailer wiring, the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness # HM42205 will give you a 4-way flat connector for small trailers.

For larger trailers that require a 7-way and brake controller you will need the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7 and a Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195.
