What Do You Recommend for a Canoe Carrier for a 17-Foot Canoe Weighing 90 Pounds?

Expert Reply:

For a 17-foot canoe that weighs 90 pounds, I recommend the Yakima KeelOver Rooftop Canoe Carrier with Tie-Downs - Universal Mount # Y04069. The KeelOver will fit crossbars with maximum dimensions of 3-1/2" tall x 3-1/2" wide. In addition, the KeelOver comes with 2 heavy-duty tie down straps and 2 bow/stern ties. The carrier itself weighs about 5 pounds. As long as the weight of your canoe is less than the roof capacity of your vehicle this should work well for you.

The only concern you need to keep in mind with having a long canoe is making sure to not have the canoe obstruct your front-windshield view and keeping within the bounds of local traffic laws.

If you find out that the canoe/carrier/crossbar system exceeds your roof weight capacity or obscures the driver's view out the front windshield, I recommend the Rhino-Rack T Load # RTL002. The T-Load will allow you to take some of the weight of the canoe off of your roof. If you use this setup, you will need to have at least one crossbar on your roof of your vehicle. The T-Load telescopes vertically from 42" to 64". In addition to the Extend-a-Truck, you will need the Thule Load Strap Cinch Straps w/ Padded Cam Buckles - 9' - 750 lbs - Qty 2 # TH521.

If you need a roof rack recommendation for the KeelOver, a single crossbar recommendation for the T-Load, or a hitch that is compatible with the T-Load, I would be happy to assist you if you provide the year/make/model.
