Correct Replacement Brake Components For Horse Trailer That Has Dexter Hub 8-247 Installed

Question:

The brakes on my horse trailer need some attention. Included are photos of the trailer info plate, drum external and internal, brake assembly with magnet and side view of trailer. When I started, I had no brakes at all. After inspecting, I found the ground wire dangling loose. General wiring was rather half-assed, so I spliced everything and test drove. I found I had very weak brake operation. Knowing almost nothing about electric trailer brakes, I started reading up. I would say at a minimum my magnets are bad. The brake shoes are somewhat glazed but not excessive. The drums look ok, there is no wear ridge that I can detect. Bearings are fine. I am thinking I need new brake assemblies with shoes and magnets. I dont think I need new drums, but I would like your opinion. It looks like the assembly has 4 studs that go through the axle hub with nuts on the back. Its a Calico horse trailer, 7000#. I assume that means 2 3500# axles. Please tell me what I need to know.

Thanks for all of the pictures!

On the picture showing the front of your hub there is a part number, 8-247, stamped in to the drum. That part number means you do indeed have a 3500lb axle as that is what that particular hub is designed for.

For your Calico horse trailer you will need replacement hub and drum assemblies # 84546UC3 which include all new bearings, races, grease seal, grease cap, and a lug nuts, and then replacement braking assemblies # AKEBRK-35-SA.

Since you have tandem axles you will need four drums and two of the braking assemblies.

I included videos of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
