Fit of Draw-Tite 24984 Class I Hitch on 2021 Mazda 3 Turbo Hatchback

Question:

Hi, I purchased the 24984 hitch for my 2021 Mazda3 AWD Turbo hatchback. I installed the bar this weekend, and immediately noticed a rumbling rattling sound from the rear of the vehicle. It took me a couple of days to pin down where the sound was coming from, but Ive now discovered the source. On the drivers side, the support from the exhaust where it connects to the rubber hangers is touching the angled portion of the tow bar near where it mounts to the frame with the carriage bolts. I have included a picture to help illustrate what I mean. Im worried this problem might be specific to the AWD turbo version of the hatchback, but Im not sure. Do you have any suggestions on how to remedy this problem?

The problem you're experiencing is a fairly common one.

Because an exhaust system uses rubber hangers, the exact positioning of the exhaust can vary among different cars of the same year, make and model while the exact position of the hitch will NOT vary from vehicle to vehicle. It will always sit in the same exact spot on every 2021 Mazda 3.

The good news is that there are a couple of solutions. The easiest would be to slightly bend the muffler hanger away from the hitch which will open up enough room so you won't get the rattle you're experiencing. In some cases, a longer rubber isolator can be used which would also move the muffler further away to fix the rattle. In some cases, the muffler hangers can be repositioned so that the muffler is further away from the hitch.

If you lack the resources to do this yourself, you can simply go by a local muffler shop who can handle this for you inexpensively, as the fix only involves moving the muffler by a fraction of an inch.

I've linked to a help article that outlines the methods described above.
