Comparing Class II and Class III Hitches for a 2021 Subaru Outback

Let me get this straight……. My 2021 Subaru Outback XT is rated at a maximum towing capacity of 3500 lbs with a 350 tongue weight. This seems to suggest that a Class II receiver hitch is the maximum that is appropriate. But do I understand correctly that you are recommending a Class III hitch would be better?? Application would be to pull a travel trailer of the correct weight max loaded of 3500???. Thank you.

Expert Reply:

Yes, regardless of weight capacity class III beats out class II because of the larger receiver tube opening, 2" vs. 1-1/4". The reason larger is better is because there are much more hitch mounted accessories to choose from like ball mounts or if you ever want to switch things up, bikes racks and cargo carriers. I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # DT94MR which has a hidden install look. I have attached an install video I did below.

To finish your setup I also recommend picking up the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector part # 118467 and etrailer Ball Mount Kit for 2" Hitches part # 989900.
