Comparing Installations Of Camper Tie-Downs For a 2013 Ram 1500 With 6-1/2' Bed

Question:

I have a 2013 Ram 1500 Quad cab Bighorn. It has a 6’4” bed. I’m unclear what you mean by a board or step underneath the truck bed. I’m also confused about how the front anchor point and the rear bumper anchor points are installed. Is there a video?

First of all the board or step underneath truck bed is referring to nerf bar or step that extends past the cab of your 2013 Ram 1500 to where it can also be used for accessing items in your bed. These will look like the Westin R5 Modular Nerf Bars # 28-534310.

There are really 3 different types of tie down anchors used for anchoring a slide in truck camper. Really a good, better, best comparison.

The Brophy Clamp On Camper Tie-Downs # HSSF are the good anchors. These anchors are the easiest to install as they clamp onto the lip of the upper bed rail and provide an anchor point to hold the camper in place. I have linked a video below of these being installed. I do not tend to recommend these as they are only held in place by the thin sheet metal of the truck bed rails. The Brophy Basic Turnbuckles # TDHP are needed to secure the camper to the anchors.

The HappiJac Truck-Mounted Camper Tie-Downs # LC236326-205221 are the better tie downs. The front mount is mounted by sandwiching the in bed bracket with the out of bed brackets. This will require you to drill holes in the front bed wall to mount the brackets. The rear mounts are drilled and bolted into the bumper. While we do not have a video of these being installed the installation instructions have very detailed color images and I have linked them below. In my opinion the front anchors are the most difficult to install of all the anchor types. You will need a set of the HappiJac Original Turnbuckles # LC182898 for attaching to your camper.

The TorkLift Custom Frame-Mounted Camper Tie-Downs Front # TLD2121 and Rear # TLD3107 are the best option and the one I recommend. These are the only brackets that mount to the frame of your Ram, which will give you the most stable ride while driving. When you do not have the camper the brackets can quickly detach from the frame mount brackets leaving you a clean look without extra hardware sticking out from your Ram. I have linked some review videos of these that show where they will mount to the frame. You will need the TorkLift Locking FastGun Turnbuckles # TLS9526-2-LK to secure the camper to these mounts.
