Recommendations For Replacing A 1-1/2 Inch Grease Cap?

Question:

I need 2 @ bearing protectors with grease fittings like Bearing Buddies. The caps measure 1 1/2 across where they fit into the grooves on the hubs. Do you carry them? They will go on an *old* boat trailer.

The smallest option we have for something like this will be the etrailer.com Bearing Protectors w/ Covers # e99004. However, these are designed to fit a hub bore of 1.78" and will be much too large for your hubs. Having a hub bore of 1-1/2" is going to be very uncommon and, unfortunately, we will not have anything quite small enough to fit.

What you may want to do is replace the hubs with something that has a more common hub bore. The Bearing Buddies # BB1980A will fit the Easy Grease Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # AKIHUB-440-2-2K, as an example, but will use the # L44649 inner and outer bearing, so you will need to make sure these match what you have. This also has a 4 on 4 bolt pattern to attach to the wheels.

If none of this is looking correct for what you have or nothing we have matches what you currently have, your best option will be to replace the whole axle. As another example, the Dexter Trailer Idler Axle Beam with EZ-Lube Spindles # T20BTR-EZ-7258 will measure 72" from hub face to hub face and 58" from the center of one spring seat to the center of the other, so you will need to make sure this matches as well. The # AKIHUB-440-2-2K will also fit this axle very nicely, but with the EZ-Lube spindles you actually will not need the # e99005 to easily keep everything greased properly.

The EZ-Lube spindles on the # T20BTR-EZ-7258 have a zerk fitting for a grease gun to attach, and the grease caps that come with the # AKIHUB-440-2-2K have a rubber plug that can be popped out when you need access to the zerk fitting as well.
