Best Hitch and Wiring for a 2022 Subaru Outback Wagon to Tow a Small Trailer with Electric Brakes

Question:

I have a 2022 Subaru Outback wagon I just picked up. I am needing to get a hitch installed as well as wiring because I occasionally tow a small trailer with electric brakes. What all do I need to do this?

For your 2022 Subaru Outback Wagon I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # DT73RR. This hitch will provide plenty of towing capacity, has the easiest installation of the hitches confirmed to fit your Outback Wagon and will provide a 2" receiver which is the most common sized opening for ball mounts and other hitch accessories.

The next thing you will need is the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118467 which will provide you with a 4-way connector. The T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area, either behind the driver's-side trim panel or in the spare tire compartment. You will need to remove some interior paneling to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, insert the provided fuse into the in-line fuse holder. Once the 4-way is installed you can use the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7L which will use the 4-way and included parts to provide a 7-way connection that will work with a brake controller like the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 for your electric brakes. The Curt Echo is a Bluetooth-enabled brake controller that wirelessly connects to your smartphone, turning your phone into a brake control interface, so you won't have to install a bulky brake controller in your Outback Wagon. Using the Curt No-Drill Bracket # C57202 will give you the bracket needed to mount your 7-way on your hitch with the included bracket in the # ETBC7L kit.

To complete your towing package you can pick up the etrailer Ball Mount Kit # 989899. This kit will provide you with 2 different ball mounts, 2 different hitch balls, a pin and clip and a storage bag. This will help ensure you have everything needed to get out and towing.
