Will I have to Reduce the Weight Capacity on My Receiver If using an Extended Ball Mount?
Question:
If my ball mount length is 2 inches longer than the OEM mount, does that reduce my allowable tongue weight due to the lever effect?

Helpful Expert Reply:
Using a ball mount like the Brophy # BH20 that is 13-1/4" long compared to a more standard Curt # D-4 that is 10-1/4" long, will not reduce the maximum tongue weight allowed on your receiver. It is important to be sure to not exceed the weight ratings on either your receiver, the ball mount or the hitch ball. As all 3 of these will have their own maximum weight ratings be sure to never exceed the lowest rating of all the components.
You will only need to look at reducing weight when you look at adapters as those will add a significant amount of distance and increase the lever effect past what the manufacturer tests the receiver for.
