Pin Box And 5th Wheel Hitch Upgrade For 2019 Ram 3500

Question:

I have trouble with rail clearance with my existing Reese 16 K hitch. I’ve read your links about the sidewinder but also looked at the Anderson gooseneck concept. My trailer is a grand design solitude 375RES with a loaded weight of 16,800 pounds and pin weight of approx 3500 pounds. I bought the truck, 2019 Ram 3500 with RAM box, used with the hitch already in it. First question is will the rails that the 16 K are mounted on support a heavier hitch to get me up to the gross weight of the trailer? Second question is is it better to go with the sidewinder, or convert over to an Anderson gooseneck, both costly because both need a new king pin hitch. Beauty of the gooseneck is that since I’m already payload challenged it would take some of the weight out of the pick up truck bed. The Curt Hitch came with the trailer but I doubt it’s going to be usable Thanks so much!

I called Lippert and found out your pinbox is a 1621. So the Reese Sidewinder 5th Wheel King Pin with Rotating Turret - 20,000 lbs # RP34FR will be the replacement you need if you want to go with a rotating turret. Because you have the RAM box the sidewinder is the only option for you. A gooseneck or a slider will not work with RAM boxes.

I would pair it with the Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - Single Jaw - 20,000 lbs # RP30928 it can raise up to 18 inches. It will work with your rails as well.

Question:

That combo does come with the wedge that is necessary to keep the king pin stationary in the trailer hitch in the bed correct?

The Reese Sidewinder 5th Wheel King Pin with Rotating Turret - 20,000 lbs # RP34FR comes with a universal wedge and will work with your Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - Single Jaw - 20,000 lbs # RP30928.

If you do want the specific wedge made for it though you can find it here Sidewinder Wedge Kit for 20,000-lb Reese ELITE, M-Series, or ProSeries Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitches # RP44FR.
